The ceremony unfolds as the guards line up in formation in front of Sungnyemun, their post, followed by the appearance of the timekeeping official who signals the dawn bell, and the sounding of conch and trumpet horns. On the commander's order, the guards perform the gate-opening ceremony for Sungnyemun. The guard ceremony proper then begins, with the first and second guard units rotating duty as the ceremony proceeds.
